WEE Center Illness Policy & Guidelines
Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether your child is well enough to attend school. The WEE Center has the following guidelines to help parents determine if their child may attend school when not feeling well.
Children attending the WEE Center MUST be well enough to fully participate in all aspects of the program, including outdoor play.
Fever
Your child may not attend school with a temperature of 99.5 degrees under the arm if there are accompanying symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, cough, vomiting, etc., or 100.0 degrees under the arm with no other symptoms. Children must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Stomachache, Vomiting, and Diarrhea
A child who has vomited and/or has diarrhea should be kept home until the symptoms have resolved. Consult your child's doctor if fever and stomach pain persists, your child has poor oral intake, or appears to be dehydrated. Signs of dehydration include: dry mouth, no tears when crying, sunken eyes, and/or urinating less than 4 times in 24 hours. Remember to wash hands frequently.
Rash
A rash is usually a sign of a viral infection. It may also be an allergic reaction to medication, food, or chemicals. If your child has an unusual rash or if the rash is associated with a fever, contact your child's doctor. Keep your child home from school until the rash has been diagnosed. Please bring a note from the doctor's office when your child returns from school.
Head Lice
Head lice infestation is a common occurrence among young children. If you discover that your child has head lice or their eggs (nits), please notify the Center right away and call your child's doctor for instructions on proper treatment. To prevent the spread of head lice, the WEE Center has a "no nit" policy. You will be asked to pick up your child immediately if we find lice or nits. A child may not return to school until treatment has been administered and no lice or nits are visible.
Red Eyes
When the white part of the eye appears red and produces a yellow or green discharge, call your child's doctor. Your child may have conjunctivitis (pink eye) a common, but highly contagious infection. Your child may need eye ointment and may return to school only after 24 hours of treatment. Remember to wash hands frequently. Give your child a separate towel and wash cloth and launder the child's pillow case to help reduce the chances of re-infection.
Medication
If your child requires medication at school, the following must happen:
-
Parents must sign a medication form before any medication can be given at the Center.
-
The first dose of a new medication must be given at home before we can administer it at the Center. This is so you will know if there is going to be an adverse reaction.
Non-Prescription Medications may be given according to parents' directions. Except for acetaminophen (Tylenol) or topical medication, ONE DOSE ONLY, may be given. We can give additional doses only with a doctor's note.
We will not give acetaminophen for a fever.
Prescription Medication may only be given according to a doctor's written instructions on the pharmacy label.
All Medications MUST be in their original containers!
